1. The One-Minute TIP

Do what you love. You will make your biggest contribution
when you passionately pursue your talents and use your
strengths. Martin Luther King, Jr. did many great things,
but perhaps his greatest moment came in Washington, DC when
he proclaimed, "I have a dream!" We all remember that, and
millions have been inspired by it. What's your dream?

2. Welcome Notes

After several days of our famous Oregon fog, this morning is
absolutely gorgeous! As I walked this morning, the moon was
setting over the hills to the west, the stars were out, and there
was a magnificent blue-black-silver in the east that promised
another great day. Now, the sky is turning pink and orange,
and soon the sun will peak over the Cascades. What a world!

A couple weeks ago, I mentioned reading "Jackdaws" by Ken
Follett, and was surprised by the number of people who
wrote to ask what else I read, so I'll report that this
week I read Edmund Morgan's new biography of Benjamin
Franklin, which is superb, and yesterday I read Michael
Crichton's new novel, "Prey", which was surprisingly fast
reading, but it has some deliciously scary stuff in it.

I want to remind you about my monthly "Ask the Expert" call,
this month
with Kristie Tamsevicius on Wednesday and invite
you to join us! Talking with experts, picking the brains of
successful, knowledgeable people is the "short cut to
success"! Learning by trial-and-error is simply too
expensive! Why not learn from the best of the best? Learn
from people who have already been there, done it, and who
can teach you! Success is not an accident. It is the
logical, predictable result of doing the right things, in
the right way, at the right time. Don't "try" and struggle
and suffer! Ask the experts to help you!

I hope you'll join us EVERY month at:  Ask the Experts!

Finally, I want to ask for your help in reaching my Big
Hairy Audacious Goal of 100,000 people this year! If you
enjoy TIPS, please tell a few friends and encourage them to
sign up. They can subscribe by sending an email to:

3:  We Become What We Think About Most

There is great wisdom in the idea that "we become what we
think about most of the time". The human brain is a goal-
seeking, problem-solving machine, and the things we think
about, focus on, and worry about inevitably shape our
destiny. We all know this, and yet most of us completely
fail to see (or seize) the opportunity.

Most of us know the computer engineering phrase, "GIGO",
which usually stands for "Garbage In, Garbage Out". If you
give a computer false data or confusing instructions, it
dutifully processes the "garbage" you put in and gives you
"garbage" back out.

In human terms, however, the phrase can also stand for
"Good In, Good Out". I like that interpretation much better!

This week I've been contemplating the things most of us
"put in" to our lives.

As I get older, I may be getting cranky, but there does
seem to be an amazing amount of garbage in our society.
This is the "awards season" in the entertainment industry
and I see various people, movies, songs and shows being
nominated, and I'm amazed at the garbage that is being
considered "the best". Do real people actually watch this
stuff? Do we listen to it, or sit on our couches and bring
it into our homes?

More importantly, do we permit it to enter our brains?

This week, I also had several emails and conversations with
people who really inspire me. One woman, age 67, wrote
that she was considering canceling her subscription to TIPS
because she was no longer going to have any goals except to
"do what I want, have fun and leave this world a little bit
better." I wrote back that I thought that was "one of the
noblest goals I've heard in a long time." I hope she's
still a subscriber!

I talked with a man who is leaving a lucrative law practice
to teach high school math. He'll earn less, but as he
said, "(our) kids are grown, our expenses are down, and I
think I can contribute more that way, than in the boardrooms
where I've spent most of my life." He's pursuing a grand
dream, and my guess is he'll have the best (and perhaps some
of the worst) days of his life! And he'll know he's alive!
Whoopee!

Several years ago, Michael Clark, gave me a wonderful
phrase. He said, "When you do what you love, you'll never
work another day the rest of your life." I love that, and
have (usually) found it to be true.

Sure, some things frustrate me, and sometimes I frustrate
myself, and life throws a curve once in a while, but doing
what we love, what we're good at, and what fulfills us,
changes everything!

In my opinion, if you truly desire to live well, to achieve
much and (perhaps) to make some real money, consider these
two propositions:

1. Refuse to fill your time, your life or your brain with
garbage. Read the best stuff. Talk with the healthiest,
wisest, smartest, most ambitious people you can. Attend
the seminars, learn from the experts! Listen to amazing
music. Sit quietly and listen to the whisperings of your
heart. Laugh a lot. Worship often, and be grateful.

2. Do what you love. You will make your biggest
contribution when you passionately pursue your talents and
use your strengths. Martin Luther King, Jr. did many great
things, but perhaps his greatest moment came in Washington,
DC when he proclaimed, "I have a dream!" We all remember
that, and millions have been inspired by it. What's your
dream?

Some of us can change jobs or move around the world
whenever we wish. For others, there are responsibilities
and obligations and things take more time, but in the end,
life is to be lived and it requires our very best. Life,
and true success, will never settle for anything less.

4. Quotes of the Week

"There's no scarcity of opportunity to make a living at what you
love. There is only a scarcity of resolve to make it happen."
                                        -- Wayne Dyer

"It is our duty as men and women to proceed as though the
limits to our abilities do not exist."
                                        -- Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

"The minute you settle for less than you deserve, you get
even less than you settled for."
                                        -- Maureen Dowd

"The man who comes up with a means for doing or producing
anything better, faster or more economically has his future
and his fortune at his fingertips."
                                        -- John Paul Getty

5. Strictly Business:  The Power of Two

The power of synergy, joint-ventures and collaboration
always amazes me.

In designing and negotiating the details for our "Ask the
Expert" call this Wednesday, I've spent hours on the phone
with Kristie, asking about her best material, reading her
reports, and thinking about my business and what she can
teach me. Even if no one attended the call, my profits
would be enormous - and they are tax free since they are
not measured in dollars and cents!

By putting our heads together, we are both smarter, more
efficient and more effective. We have sharpened our focus,
and honed our skills. We will share our best material with
the audience (I'm delighted to report the call is filling
quickly!) but the PROCESS of creating the call is quite
honestly, my greatest benefit. And, that can never be lost
or taken away.

Most small business owners completely miss the power of
joint-ventures. They see their colleagues as competitors.
They want to keep their business knowledge a secret, and
tend to view others with suspicion, and that is a shame,
and a waste. It limits your success.

Who can you collaborate with? Who has a system, a product
or an idea you can bring to your audience for mutual
benefit? Who can you partner with on a special project?
Who would you like to hang out with, learn from, or
introduce to your customers?

To learn more about joint-ventures and extending your
reach, I hope you'll join us! To learn more, Click here!

7. Humor:    Will The REAL Moron Please Stand Up?

It's been a while since I've passed along humor from my
friend and regular supplier, Dolly. These are real gems
and I take her on her word of honor that they are true,
documented and absolutely reliable - right, Dolly? I
wouldn't want to look like a moron by falling for a fib!

1. When AT&T fired President John Walter after nine
months, saying he lacked intellectual leadership, he
received a $26 million severance package. And it's supposed
to be Walter who's lacking intelligence?!

2. Police in Oakland, California spent two hours
attempting to subdue a gunman who had barricaded himself
inside his home. After firing ten tear gas canisters,
officers discovered that the man was standing beside them
in the police line, shouting, "Please come out and give
yourself up."

3. An Illinois man, pretending to have a gun, kidnapped a
motorist and forced him to drive to two different automated
teller machines, wherein the kidnapper proceeded to
withdraw money from his own bank accounts.

4. A man walked into a Topeka, Kansas store and asked for
all the money in the cash drawer. Apparently, the take was
too small, so he tied up the store clerk and worked the
counter himself for three hours until police showed up and
grabbed him.

5. Police in Los Angeles had good luck with a robbery
suspect who just couldn't control himself during a lineup.
When detectives asked each man in the lineup to repeat
the words: "Give me all your money or I'll shoot," the man
shouted, "That's not what I said!"

6. In Modesto, California, Steven Richard King was arrested
for trying to hold up a bank without a weapon. King used a
thumb and a finger to simulate a gun, but unfortunately, he
failed to keep his hand in his pocket. (hellooooooo!)

7. THE GRAND FINALE: Last summer, on Lake Isabella,
located an hour east of Bakersfield, California, some folks
had a problem with their new boat. Seems it was sluggish,
no matter how much power was applied. After about an hour
of trying to make it go, they put to a nearby marina,
thinking someone there could tell them what was wrong. A
thorough topside check revealed everything in perfect
working condition. The engine ran fine, and the propeller
was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina guys
jumped in the water to check underneath. He came up choking
on water, he was laughing so hard. Under the boat, still
strapped securely in place, was the trailer!
