1. The One-Minute TIP

Plan your days and work your plan. Before leaving your
office in the evening, or first thing in the morning,
outline your day. Review your schedule, choose your most
important activities, and FOCUS on them! Every single
morning, I list the three most important things I need to
do that day. They may be work or play or something in
between, but they are my CHOICES and once committed to
them, I don't go to bed until they are done.

2. Welcome Notes

Wow! Last week's article, "Reading for Greatness" generated
an amazing response! We must have received 100 emails
endorsing the joy and power of reading, and many
congratulated me, as if encouraging people to read was a
courageous thing to do. One woman wrote that her teenagers
"are even discouraged from reading in school, told instead
to do research in the Internet!" I certainly hope that's a
rare exception!

The other big item this week is our American "Independence
Day", and while our subscribers around the world don't
celebrate July 4th, I certainly hope every subscriber will
join us in honoring the concepts of personal freedom,
personal responsibility, and opportunity for all. As
Americans, we can get caught up in the celebrations and
forget the principles on which our nation is founded.

This week, take a moment to read the Declaration of
Independence and use your freedom of speech to write a
letter to your newspaper or elected representative. Speak
up, and use the freedoms that were purchased for us as
great price.

3:  Make Every Day Count!

The difference between extraordinary performance and run-of-
the-mill performance is often found in the "little things".
We know that education, intelligence, wealth, even
personality do not explain the difference between high
achievement and failure. Those things aren't even close!

What we know is that highly successful people use better,
smarter, more effective strategies.

There is only a slight difference between landing a plane
safely and crashing into the end of the runway, but that
slight difference is the difference between life and death.
In achieving your goals and creating the life you truly want,
it's the small differences that will ultimately determine
your long-term results.

High achievers know the value of an effective strategy.
Highly successful people constantly review their strategies
and measure their results to see if they are "on course".
Are they getting what they want? Are they making progress?
At the end of the day, is it working?

In my opinion, the most important difference between
success and failure has less to do with talent, education,
resources or "luck" than it has to do with following an
efficient strategy.

I have identified about a dozen key strategies in high
achievers, and we'll be reviewing them over the next few
months in TIPS, but the first and most fundamental strategy
is that high achievers MAKE EVERY DAY COUNT!

Several years ago, I heard about a group for cancer
survivors called "Make Today Count" and that helped me
recognize this strategy when I saw it in my most successful
clients. They focus their time, they plan their days, they
do "first things first" and they GET THINGS DONE. No
distractions!

In his excellent book, "Thinking for A Change", John
Maxwell details his strategies for organizing his work a
month in advance and reviewing again at the start of each
day. He is a master of planning and making every day count!

I do not believe it is necessary to work extremely long
hours, or to work extremely hard. Often, we can achieve a
full day's RESULTS with just one action, if it is the RIGHT
action at the right time, done in the right way. High
achievers do the right things, at the right time, and they
do them every day.

Some days they take "off" and rest. When they play, they
play all-out. Some days they work, and when they work, they
work full-speed-ahead. The point is that each and every
day, they make progress, they get something done. They move
toward their most important goals.

Most people rush through life. We are all busy, but are we
really getting anywhere? Is all that energy and activity
moving us forward? With high achievers, day by day, the
answer is always an emphatic YES!

5. Strictly Business:  The World's Best Tools

This week I was talking with a colleague about technology
and computers, and told her about my policy of replacing
our office computers every 18 months, or sooner. She
exclaimed that she couldn't afford that, and my comment was
that I couldn't afford not to.

The rule is that the most productive workers, and
ultimately the most successful people, always have the best
tools. Period.

To earn more, you must know and produce more, and that
requires better tools. For most of us, our key tools are
our knowledge, our computers, and the colleagues we
associate with every day.

1. That means you must learn more. Continuous learning is a
must. Brian Tracy points out that if you read one book per
week, in ten years you will have read 500 books, and then
he asks this question: "Would reading 500 books give you
an edge over your competitors, knowing that most people
never read at all?" I think the answer is obvious.

2. It means investing in the best equipment. I replace our
computers because I do not want "down time". I replace them
as insurance against failed hard drives and burned out
chips. I replace them (and up-grade our software) because I
trust Murphy's Law that if systems CAN fail, they WILL
fail, and at the worst possible moment. I want our office
to be a "problem-free zone" where we work without
frustration or distraction. Get good equipment.

3. Expand your network. There is great truth that "it's who
you know that counts". My network of amazing people have
the answers to almost any question, they assist me, and
they support my clients. It's the network that provides me
with what I need, when I need it, virtually every time.

To earn more, get better tools.
