1. The One-Minute TIP

This week, I purchased the domain name,
"ToolsForTheMind.net", and my vision is to make it a
source for tools that will transform lives. Our mission
at Resources for Success!(tm) is to help 100,000 people
reach their goals and create "lives of peace, passion,
power, purpose and unusual prosperity." In the weeks ahead,
I want to expand ToolsForTheMind into a place where you can
learn, get motivated, and become the person you know you
can be. I hope you'll visit:  http://ToolsForTheMind.net

2. Welcome Notes

I'm writing this on a very warm afternoon, here on my deck.
Cody is sleeping at my feet, and even the birds have sought
shade during the afternoon heat. Granted, today I wish it
were a bit cooler, but I LOVE summer!

Every morning, about 6:00, Cody and I go for our walk,
listen to the birds and greet a couple of squirrels that
love to harass poor Cody. We listen to a rooster that lives
down the road (Chanticleer welcoming the dawn), and greet a
new day. Henry Thoreau thought each morning was the dawn of
a new world filled with unimagined opportunities, and I
like to think that's true.

The question is not usually what fantastic dreams we have
for the next 30 years, but more realistically, how will we
use THIS day? Life comes in human-sized increments, a day
at a time. The trick is to make the most of each day, and
trust that a few thousand "good days" strung end to end
will make life work out just fine. And so this week, I wish
you a string of "good days"!

And, here's a free "TIP" - be sure to register your phone
with the national "Do Not Call" list to stop those annoying
telemarketing calls as you're sitting down to dinner. (This
applies in the U.S. only.) To register your phone numbers
(including your cell phone), be sure to visit: http://donotcall.gov

3:  Tools for The Mind

Recently, I saw a set of new, high-tech cookware hanging
in the kitchen and made the mistake of asking how much it
cost. Mary lovingly reminded me that I never scrimp on the
cost of woodworking tools, or new computers, or a new
golf club. Her point is well taken. Investing in the right tool
for the job is always a good idea! When it comes to our
tools, we want the best.

Except when it comes to tools for the mind.

Whether it's audio programs or books, or classes or
coaching, as a society too often we "can't afford it". How
many of us will invest in a new laptop, a vacation or new
barbeque grill (I recently bought one) but then look at the
cost of a book and convince ourselves that we can't afford
it, and if we bought it, we "wouldn't have time" to read it?

We all know that we live in the "information age" and that
continuous learning is the key to the future, and yet as a
practical matter, we are "too busy".

I recently talked with a colleague who coaches real estate
brokers and she noted that her most productive clients
"constantly" listen to audio programs. She noted that "if a
person will not (listen to tapes), I don't think they are
coachable. Listening to tapes is the LEAST they can do to
increase their income potential. If they won't do that, I
won't coach them."

I agree.

We all have areas where we MUST improve our performance.
Whether the challenge is in our careers, our families, our
fitness, communication skills or a hobby, staying where we
are is no longer an option. The world is moving too quickly
and changing too fast. We must improve our skills on a
daily basis.

Fortunately, this is not difficult. What's difficult is
finding time to DO more stuff, but I am not talking about
that. In fact, my point is that we should be doing LESS,
but doing it better, smarter and with more joy. Too often,
we confuse activity with productivity, and they are NOT the
same thing!

There is a old story that one of Henry Ford's early
production lines broke down and after his staff had tried
everything they could think of to fix it, he called a
specialist, who found the problem and fixed it in a few
minutes. Later, he sent Ford a bill for $10,000, which was
a fortune at that time.

Ford refused to pay it, claiming it was far too much for
ten minute's work, so the specialist revised his bill to
read, "Repairs, $10. Knowing HOW to do the repair, $9,990."
Ford quickly paid the bill.

Knowing what to do, when and how to do it, pays off!

One of the great ironies of our age is that for the first
time in history, survival is rarely a question. We have
food, clothing and shelter in abundance and are free to
spend our time pursuing other things. The question becomes,
what will you do with your one and only, marvelous life?
Will you collect things, or memories? Will you pursue more
and better "stuff", or a better life?

In Thomas Leonard's memorable phrase, the choice is between
creating a life or building a lifestyle.

This week, I purchased the domain name,
"ToolsForTheMind.net", and my vision is to make it a
source for tools that will transform lives. Our mission
at Resources for Success!(tm) is to help 100,000 people
achieve their goals and create "lives of peace, passion,
power, purpose and unusual prosperity." In the coming
months, I want to expand ToolsForTheMind into a place where
you can learn, get motivated, and become the person you
know you can be.

For now, it's a basic first draft, but I hope you'll drop
by, check it out, and see what you can find that will move
your life in the direction you want to go.

4. Quotes of the Week

"You are what you think about all day long."
                                         -- Dr. Robert Schuller

"Once you know that what you think about expands, you start
getting real careful about what you think about."
                                         -- Wayne Dyer

"The way we live our days, is the way we live our lives."
                                         -- Annie Dillard

"We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a
big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can
make which, over time, add up to big differences that we
often cannot foresee."
                                         -- Marian Wright Edelman

5. Strictly Business:   The Time for Planting is NOW!

Last week I had the privilege of being invited to an
exclusive club with a number of leading business people
here in Oregon. The dinner was superb, the wine was
excellent, and then we retired to a room over-looking the
Willamette River for conversation, cigars and cognac in a
classic, 19th century setting. I'll remember it for years!

What struck me was the degree to which these highly
successful people (I was by far the least wealthy person in
the room) were focused on using the summer to position
themselves and their businesses in the months ahead. They
all assumed three things:

1. The economy is going to rebound quickly and dramatically
in the next few months, and they wanted to take advantage of that.

2. Most of their competitors were "sleeping or on vacation"
as one gentlemen phrased it, and.

3. Now is the time to get ready for the economic boom ahead.
Those who wait until the recovery arrives will be too late to participate.

They had lots of reasons for their optimism, from economic
statistics to "gut feelings", but they were essentially
unanimous that now is the time to prepare to make money in
the months ahead. True, the money won't actually arrive
until next year, but the time to boost inventory, hire the
right people, launch marketing campaigns and prepare is NOW.

What do you need to do NOW to grow your business in the
months ahead? If you KNEW that your best customers would
want more of your goods and services in 2004, what would
you do to get ready? My sense is that this is the time for
planting, the time for preparation, the time to get ready.

I believe it was Vince Lombardi who observed that "everyone
has the will to win. What is unusual is the will to prepare
to win." NOW is the time for planting seeds; the harvest
will come in due course.

Got a Website?
Earn Passive Income!

Over the years, I've paid lots of money for shopping carts,
autoresponders and systems that were supposed to help me
serve my subscribers and make money from my website. None
of them worked, or more accurately they worked, but they
were complex, confusing and didn't work very well. Then I
discovered Don Schnure and the amazing programs he's put
together. They work! They are powerful, EASY to use, and
they let me automate my newsletter, my affiliate programs
and my shopping cart, with no hassle! I love this! And, you
can use it absolutely FREE for 30 days, to check it out.

7. Humor:    Lawyers And Grandmothers

It's never fair to pick on any profession (as a
Psychologist, I know about that!), but we do it anyway.
To my attorney friends, I apologize, but this is just too
good to pass up. To Paul Vogt who sent it my way, thanks!

Why lawyers should never ask a witness a question if they
aren't prepared for the answer:

During a trial in a small town, the prosecuting attorney
called his first witness to the stand - a grandmotherly,
elderly woman. He approached her and asked, "Mrs. Jones,
do you know me?"

She responded, "Why, yes I do know you, Mr. Williams. I've
known you since you were a young boy, and frankly, you've
been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on
your wife, you manipulate people and talk about them behind
their backs. You think you're a big shot when you haven't
the brains to realize you never will amount to anything
more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you."

The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he
pointed across the room and asked, "Mrs. Jones, do you
know the defense attorney?"

She again replied, "Why yes, I do. I've known Mr. Bradley
since he was a youngster, too. He's lazy, bigoted, and he
has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal relationship
with anyone and his law practice is one of the worst in
the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife
with three different women. Yes, I know him."

The defense attorney almost died!

At this point, the judge brought the courtroom to silence,
called both counselors to the bench, and in a very quiet
voice, said, "If either of you asks her if she knows me,
you'll be jailed for contempt."
