1. The One-Minute TIP

Set your direction and chart your course. And, for those
who say they don't know their grand or ultimate purpose in
life, take comfort in the fact that a ship will visit many
ports in a lifetime of smooth sailing. Do you want to visit
Paris in the spring? Then set your course, save some money,
buy the tickets and do it!

2. Welcome Notes

What a glorious fall this is! Last Friday, Mary and I took
the day and drove through the mountains and Mother Nature
put on a wonderful show for us. For those of you familiar
with Oregon, we drove over old Highway 242, a narrow "back
road" through the Cascade mountains. There was almost no
traffic, we stopped several times to enjoy the view, and
had a wonderful lunch at a resort called Black Butte Ranch.

Wherever you are, surprise yourself and a loved one with a
"mental health day". Take off and go to a park or visit
family or friends. Go to the zoo, the beach or an art
museum, but whatever you do, be sure to laugh, hold hands,
and maybe share some ice cream. It doesn't "cost"; it pays!

And, in that light, be SURE to check out the new book my
friend and colleague, Mershon Niesner, has just published,
"Ribbons of Love". It's a marvelous story about the power
of affirmations. Remember, we CHOOSE what we think about,
and ultimately, we BECOME what we think about most of the
time! You can read more about it and order this marvelous
little book at:
<a href=" http://www.mershonbell.com/ribbons.html ">Order here</a>

Finally, I want to thank over 200 people who wrote with
advice about keeping TIPS in this current "plain vanilla"
format verses changing to html, with all the color and
graphics. Over 70% of you said you prefer this simple
format, so I expect we'll stay with it, at least for now.
I couldn't respond to all of you individually, but I did
read every email and I greatly appreciate your help and
advice. Thank you!

3:  Where Do You Think You're Going?

This week I saw one of those silly television "sit-coms"
where the daughter was sneaking out to a party and the
parents challenged her with the angry question, "Just where
do you think you're going?"

What a great question!

The show was silly and insipid, but the question is one
every adult MUST ask - and answer - on a regular basis.
Just exactly where ARE you headed? Where are you going in
life?

We have all heard the comment that most people spend more
time planning a party than planning their lives and sadly,
we know it's true.

We also know the familiar warnings about the dangers of
failing to choose a direction. Who hasn't heard things
such as:

"No wind blows in favor of a ship without a rudder" or how
about, "If you don't have goals you are doomed to work for
people who do"?

The truth is that we are all tossed and blown by wind and
currents every day. The phone rings and a friend wants a
favor or a family member is sick. Popular media tempts us
to "need" various consumer goods and to worry about all the
threats in our world every day. We go to work only to
learn that the company is down-sizing, moving or changing
in a way we didn't anticipate.

Every day, life gives us challenges and we are blown off-
course, and only those with a clear sense of direction are
able to get back on course quickly and easily.

People who know where they are going have written goals
that act as maps and guideposts. They have clear values
that act like a compass to chart their course. People who
know where they are going surround themselves with friends
and colleagues, books and tapes and posters that guide them
to their ultimate destinations.

It's said that an airplane is off-course for most of its
flight. At any given moment, winds and weather blow it
a bit left or right, or push it too high, or drop it
slightly below its assigned altitude, and if the pilot
fails to notice these things the plane will miss its
destination, eventually run out of fuel and crash.
Fortunately, pilots constantly monitor their course and
make corrections to reach their destination safely and on-
time.

Adults need to know where they are going in life. This is
your one and only glorious life and you do NOT want to blow
it!

Set your direction and chart your course. And, for those
who say they don't know their grand or ultimate purpose in
life, take comfort in the fact that a ship will visit many
ports in a lifetime of smooth sailing. Do you want to
visit Paris in the spring? Then set your course, save some
money, buy the tickets and do it!

Do you want more education? Get a library card (it's
free!), or buy the books and take the courses. Want to
start a business? It's easy!

Define your next "port of call", chart a course, and every
day, sail your ship. This is not difficult! It is,
however, the price one pays for achievement, satisfaction
and fulfillment. So, just exactly where do you think
you're going in life? Answer the question, chart your
course, and enjoy the trip.

4. Quotes of the Week

"In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is
the right thing. The worst thing you can do is nothing."

"Man is so made that when anything fires his soul,
impossibilities vanish."
                                       -- Jean De La Fontaine

"You don't have to be great to get started but you have to

5. Strictly Business:   The Dawn of 2004

Have you purchased your 2004 calendars yet? Highly
successful people already have a good start on their goals,
plans, and schedule for the coming year and you do too,
right?

This week, I was planning some speaking engagements for the
fall, that's NEXT fall, and a friend asked me how I could
plan so far in advance. I asked him how he could fulfill
his potential and achieve his dreams without planning ahead.

High achievers know where they are going (see the article,
above). They chart their course, and that often begins
with their calendars, appointment books and "to do" lists.
This morning, I confirmed that I will be in Hawaii in
November, 2004. I know I'll be in South America this
winter and that the World Class Life Conference is in
Wisconsin next May 20th to the 22nd.

For many years, we've used large wall calendars that show
the entire year at a glance. We buy them ahead of time,
and begin by plotting the most important dates - birthdays,
anniversaries, holidays and vacations. We plot all
scheduled trips, and time for personal retreats, continuing
education and personal development. For the most part,
these are noted in red to signify our priorities and their
importance.

Then, we plot time for business development, Board
meetings, workshops and business travel. Finally, we mark
dates for planning, for writing and program development,
and of course, good old fashioned office work days.

Many professionals and business owners enjoy creating
"plans", but too often their plans are hard to distinguish
from dreams or fairy tales because they fail to anchor
their plans with dates and budgets. Take time to plan the
year ahead. Write down your schedule. Commit time and
money for personal development, family travel, and business
growth. Now is the time to create the 2004 you really want!

6. Resources and Tools for YOUR Success!

 #1 Ribbons of Love
   by Mershon Niesner
   http://www.mershonbell.com/ribbons.html

One of my favorite people, Mershon Niesner, has published a
wonderful little book about the power of affirmations and
their PRACTICAL use to help us through the tough times and
to achieve our highest aspirations. "You are (and will
become) what you think about most of the time." Mershon
uses affirmations to help her clients bring about change in
their lives. As a motherless daughter, divorcee, widow,
entrepreneur, and total survivor, Mershon shares her own
story to help readers see the power of affirmation in real
life circumstances. Use the affirmations in this book to
enhance and change your life, bringing you peace, joy, and
ultimate abundance. Highly recommended!  A GREAT book!

  #2: Attention Authors and Soon-to-be-Authors!
  http://philiphumbert.com/go/rg.htm

My friend and colleague, Randy Gilbert's first book was an
Amazon.com BEST SELLER! Then, he coached my friend,
Kristie T., so that HER book became a BEST SELLER! Taking
your book from the dusty back-shelves to the top of the
list obviously makes you money and opens doors, but more
importantly, it gets YOUR book in the hands of people who
need it. It builds your reputation and creates far more
opportunities to speak, write, and create. Whether you
have a book and want more sales, or are just outlining a
future book, EVERY author needs this information! Randy
teaches you the secrets that will take YOUR book to the top
of the lists! If you have a book, you need this. If you
are about to start writing, I recommend it even more
strongly - you need these tools to be sure that, when your
book is completed, thousands of people will buy it! If you
(or a loved one) has a book - or dreams of becoming an
author - you should definitely have this vital tool!
Be a Best-Selling Author!

  #3: ToolsfortheMind.net
   http://toolsforthemind.net

High achievers constantly add to their "toolbox" of
information, skills and knowledge, and I've created this
site as a "one-stop-shop" where you can find the best
materials I know on the web. My clients and I have
personally used every resource listed, and you can trust
them to work, and to fulfill their promises. To lose
weight, stop smoking, or to expand your business and
dominate your market, it all begins with what you know and
how well you THINK. These tools can help!
Give yourself the BEST!

  #4 Your Home-Based, On-Line Cash Machine
   http://philiphumbert.com/go/1A.htm

Every week I get emails asking how I broadcast TIPS, manage
my autoresponders and run my website, and for me there is
only one source for those services: Don Schnure at
1Automation. Over the years, I've used several shopping
carts and broadcast companies, but NONE have had the tools,
the reliability, ease-of-use and friendliness this has. It
simply works! (And, it costs pennies a day, far less than
I paid 5 years ago!) If you have a website and want to
start or build your mailing list, or sell products, or
generate affiliate income - and who doesn't? - I encourage
you to check this out. You can even use it for 30 days to
see how it can work for you.  Check it out!

7. Humor:   Airline Humor

A list like this has been around for quite a while and I
think I used a similar list in TIPS a while back, but my
wife, Mary, found these pasted up at her office and to
honor her and all the hard-working nurses at McKenzie-
Willamette Hospital, here's your list! Enjoy!

After every flight, Qantas pilots fill out a form called a
gripe sheet, which tells mechanics about problems with the
aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems, document
their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe
sheets before the next flight. Never let it be said that
ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are some actual
maintenance complaints submitted by Qantas pilots and the
solutions recorded by maintenance engineers.

By the way, Qantas is the only major airline that has never
had an accident.

(P= The problem logged by the pilot.)
(S= The solution and action taken by the mechanics.)

P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement.
S: Almost replaced left inside main tire.

P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough.
S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft.

P: Something loose in cockpit.
S: Something tightened in cockpit.

P: Dead bugs on windshield.
S: Live bugs on back-order.

P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per
minute descent.
S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground.

P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.
S: Evidence removed.

P: DME volume unbelievably loud.
S: DME volume set to more believable level.

P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.
S: That's what they're for.

P: IFF inoperative.
S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode.

P: Suspected crack in windshield.
S: Suspect you're right.

P: Number 3 engine missing.
S: Engine found on right wing after brief search.

P: Aircraft handles funny.
S: Aircraft warned to straighten up, fly right, and be serious.

P: Target radar hums.
S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics.

P: Mouse in cockpit.
S: Cat installed.

P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like
a midget pounding on something with a hammer.
S: Took hammer away from midget.
