1. The One-Minute TIP

In the past, learning to walk and talk, learning to read,
or drive a car or use a computer were skills that expanded
our world, and now as adults, every new level of personal
development continues to expand our world and lets us play
a "bigger game". The more we develop ALL of our potential,
the more opportunities we have and the more effectively we
can seize them.

2. Welcome Notes

Last week I wrote about the necessity for Personal
Development. I said that everything we want to achieve in
life begins with being the kind of person who is capable of
achieving that particular dream. This week brought new
proof that there are no "coincidences" in life.

I received a copy of Eric Aronson's new book, "DASH" (see
below), and if you buy it on Monday, December 15th, he has
arranged for you to get $1000 (that is not a typo!) in
bonuses. Aronson is trying to achieve "best seller" status
on Amazon.com, so to encourage people to buy it on Monday,
he has arranged for a ton of incentives. Fortunately, the
book is excellent and I would recommend it without any
special incentives at all!

To get the book and the bonuses, follow a two-step process:

1. Buy the book on Monday, December 15th.
http://philiphumbert.com/go/dash.htm

2. Forward your email receipt from Amazon.com to:
Dash@BookBonusOffers.com  You'll get your list of bonuses
and instructions about how to claim them by return email.

ALSO...

More and more authors are doing this and I regularly
receive notices about these special offers. Last week I
announced a new list for folks who would like to receive
reviews of the BEST BOOKS I find, including notices about
bonuses worth hundreds of dollars just for buying great
books. If you would like to be part of that list (or just
check it out), send an email to:  Books@philiphumbert.com

3:  Keeping It Simple

Last week I wrote that to have or achieve more, we must
first "become" more. Personal development, "being all you
can be", is clearly the first and most powerful step to a
happy, successful life.

And the wonderful thing is that personal development is not
"hard"! In fact, it is such a natural part of life that it
is almost impossible to stop the process. How would you
prevent a child from learning language? How would you stop
a child from making friends, playing games, or growing up?
Growth is the NATURAL state of things!

Human beings are naturally curious. We explore and poke
around. We ask questions and experiment. Our natural
curiosity and the desire to "be more" has created our
world. Our determination to "be more" has started
businesses, written great books, and given us the Internet.

And yet, tragically, very few of us plan our personal
growth as intentionally as we should, and I think there are
two major reasons that we get "stuck".

The first is that we are careless with our time. Only
rarely are human beings truly "stuck"! More often we are
just so rushed, so confused and so stressed that it's easier
to say "I don't have time" than to arrange our lives, solve
our problems and make progress.

The second reason we fail to "become more" is that we don't
know how. Our schools teach us "stuff", but they don't
necessarily teach us how to become powerful human beings.
Too often, education is really about mastering the fine art
of sitting still, and life requires more of us.

While any plan for personal development is better than
none, I prefer plans that are simple. I like simple. I
like easy. I like things I understand.

So, this week I am recommending a tremendous new book by
Eric J. Aronson. The book is simply called, "DASH". I
hope you'll buy and read it.

Aronson points out that on our tombstones, our lives are
often depicted by a little "dash" between the date we were
born and the date we died. He wants that "dash" to be as
fulfilling and exciting as possible, so he's developed a
simple little acronym around that "DASH":
  D-etermination
  A-ttitude
  S-uccess
  H-appiness

Aren't those the four things that make life work out? You
can make it more complicated if you like, but for me this
little book makes a world of sense. I was sent a review
copy and expected to spend a few minutes glancing through
it, but I couldn't put it down! I read the entire book and
ended up building this issue of TIPS around it. This is
very powerful material! AND...

Eric wants to take his book to the top of the Amazon.com
best-seller list tomorrow, so if you buy it tomorrow, on
Monday, December 15th and forward your email receipt, you
can get over $1000 in bonuses, AND a chance to win an MP3
player! To get your bonuses all you have to do is:

1. Buy the book tomorrow, on Monday, December 15th.
2. Forward your receipt to: Dash@BookBonusOffers.com

This is a fantastic thing and I definitely plan to buy
several copies as gifts. Here's the link to buy the book:
http://philiphumbert.com/go/dash.htm

I hope you enjoy it, and for goodness, jump on this chance
to help Eric get his book "out there" while doing a great
thing for yourself at the same time!

things that never were and ask why not."
                                               -- George Bernard Shaw

5. Strictly Business:   Year End Tax Strategies

It's time to hit up your favorite Uncle for your annual
year-end bonus. I'm referring, of course, to getting Uncle
Sam (or your tax authority if you live outside the U.S.) to
help finance your business growth in 2004.

I know it's normal to complain about taxes and avoid them
as much as possible, and I sort of agree with that. But,
it's also true that the more taxes you pay, the more money
you made and that is definitely a GOOD thing! So, here's
hoping you get to pay a LOT of taxes this year!

But, no one wants to pay more than they have to.

So, since Uncle Sam is your business partner, and since he
always gets his fair share of the profits (he's very
insistent about that), be sure to use the rules to be as
generous to yourself as possible.

Specifically, I'm talking about making as many legitimate
investments in your business as you can before the end of
the year. Between now and the 31st, any investments you
make in your business will (generally) reduce your tax
liability by exactly the same amount, and depending on your
marginal tax bracket, that could be a very good deal!

Now, there are a couple of vital things to remember:
First, always check with your tax professional because the
laws are complex and every situation is unique.

Second, remember that your investment must be for
legitimate business purposes. You can invest in a new
computer for the office, but not a new game for your kids!
The new office furniture you've wanted is probably half-
price (after taxes), but that new bedroom set is just going
to get you in trouble if you try to deduct it. Don't mess
with Uncle Sam!

I've written an article with more details and you should
definitely do a year-end tax planning session with your
accountant, but don't miss this once a year chance to fix
up, clean up, and invest at half-price!

7. Humor:    Music for Boomers

I was going to look for some humor when my reliable buddy,
Dolly Howard, sent an email with a ton of great stuff,
including these "renovated" song titles that got me
laughing so loud that Linda came into the office to see
what was going on. I hope you enjoy them!

Some artists from the 1960's are re-releasing their hits
with new lyrics to accommodate us aging "baby boomers" --
good news, for those feeling a little older and missing
these great tunes.

Herman's Hermits - "Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Walker"

The Bee Gees - "How Can You Mend A Broken Hip"

The Temptations - "Papa's Got A Kidney Stone"

Ringo Starr - "I Get By With A Little Help From Depends"

Marvin Gaye - "I Heard It Through The Grape Nuts"

Procol Harem - "A Whiter Shade Of Hair"

Johnny Nash - "I Can't See Clearly Now"

Leo Sayer - "You Make Me Feel Like Nappin'"

ABBA - "Denture Queen"

Paul Simon - "Fifty Ways To Lose Your Liver"

Roberta Flack - "The First Time Ever I Forgot Your Face"

Commodores - "Once, Twice, Three Times To The Bathroom"

Bobby Darin - "Splish, Splash, I Was Havin' A Flash"
