1. The One-Minute TIP

As we begin a new year, renew your commitment to living a
life of responsible, ethical self-direction. Whatever your
most important goals or desires, develop the self-discipline
to achieve them. Success may require some sacrifice. So what?
If your goal is important, the price of achievement is
tiny compared to the rewards of success.

2. Welcome Notes

I hope you had a safe, invigorating and satisfying holiday!
We were able to re-connect with extended family, and it was
great! It was especially nice that my parents scheduled
cold weather and heavy snow just so we could have a
traditional white Christmas - I assume that was just for
us, and I appreciated it!

I also hope you take some time with a calendar and notebook
to plan the year you want to have in 2005. "New Year's
Resolutions" have a terrible reputation but there is power
and clarity in choosing your priorities for the new year.
Plan your holidays and vacations. Choose your benchmarks
and design the life you truly want so you can "Thrive in '05!"

And, a quick reminder about leaving plenty of "margin"
around the edges of your life. On our way home, our plane
had mechanical problems and we spent two extra days near
the Denver airport. It was annoying, but we actually had a
pretty good time - it was sort of fun staying cheerful and
encouraging some very stressed travelers and over-worked
airline employees to have a "happy holiday." We had time in
our schedule, so we had space to enjoy ourselves. That bit
of extra "margin" sure comes in handy!

Planning always beats counting on "luck" to create the life
you want. And, working with a TEAM for support and
encouragement is even more powerful! I hope you'll join the
1st TEAM Coaching project. We provide structure and
accountability; we add inspiration and practical strategies
to help you reach your goals and create the life of your
dreams. But you must take ACTION! Contact me to reserve
your space - space is limited so please do it today.

3:  The Fourth Pillar: Positive Self-Direction

At the end of last year, I did a series of TIPS based on
the Foundation and Four Pillars of achievement. For over 30
years, I've studied and worked with highly effective people,
and I've looked for the ESSENTIALS that allow some people to
run circles around the competition. Why do some people get
so much more out of life? How do successful people achieve
the extraordinary results they get? These are some of the
most important questions in life.

I do not believe it is necessary to live, as Henry Thoreau
said, "lives of quiet desperation." There is no reason for
so many to be poor, or poor in spirit, or frustrated or
lonely. Whatever type of success you desire - from making
more money to having more time or better relationships -
other people have figured out how to do it, and once you
know the recipe, you can do it, too. I believe that with
all my heart!

So, I've been trying to share the central components, the
keys or essentials, these past weeks.

We started with the unifying foundation: Know Thyself. It
is hard to live someone else's life or follow someone
else's path. Success is achieved by creating and living "a
life of one's own." First, "know thyself and to thine own
self be true."

Second, there are four essential "pillars" that high
achievers use to create and build the life they want. We've
covered the first three: the pillar of Positive Integrity,
the pillar of Positive Passion, and the pillar of Positive
Simplicity.

Now we come to the final ingredient, the pillar of Positive
Self-Direction, or if you prefer the power of self-
discipline.

This is the most powerful and the least popular of the four
pillars. It is the pillar we avoid because we are the "me"
generation. We want "instant gratification." We are not
known for our patience or the ability to delay impulses. We
are used to credit cards, variety and pleasure. We love to
be "spontaneous" even if it means we have to "pay later."

But this is not true of high achievers. They have an end-
result in mind (see the Pillar of Positive Passion) and
they stick to it. They have a sense of Positive Integrity
that keeps them on-track, and a life of Positive Simplicity
so they are rarely distracted or confused. They know the
power of self-discipline, and understand the virtues of
patience, dedication and persistence.

They know that "Rome wasn't built in a day." They know that
the Wright brothers spent years experimenting, failing,
taking notes and moving toward their goal of building the
first airplane. They love the story of the woman who ran up
to Vladimar Horowitz after one of his concerts and gushed,
"I'd give my life to play like that!" and his reply,
"Madam, I have."

High achievers know that positive self-discipline is the
raw material of greatness. Brian Tracy has made the harsh
observation that "if you cannot save money, the seeds of
greatness are not in you." Self-discipline is the ability
to decide on a course of action, and stick to it. Whether
it is saving money, losing weight, inventing the airplane
or building a business, success requires the Pillar of
Positive Self-Direction.

Know your desired outcome and let nothing distract or
divert you. High achievers know (and announce) their
direction in life. They know their goals and the path they
will take to "get there." They know the power of daily
action, and that, "inch by inch (day by day) anything's a
cinch!"

As we begin a new year, renew your commitment to living a
life of responsible, ethical self-direction. Whatever your
most important goals or desires, develop the self-
discipline to achieve them. Success may require some
sacrifice. So what? If your goal is important, the price of
achievement is tiny compared to the rewards of success.

The winners in life have always known that Integrity,
Simplicity, Passion and Discipline are the keys to a great
life and that success is a much easier path than failure.
After all, who would choose a life of chaos and frustration
over the elegance and clarity of doing the small daily
disciplines of success? Use the Four Pillars to create the
life you truly want so you can "Thrive in 'O5!"

5. Strictly Business:   What Will You Achieve in 2005?

Every living thing is either growing or dying. Every plant,
every animal and every business is either becoming more
powerful, more creative, more vibrant and dynamic, or it is
shrinking and preparing to die.

How is it with your business, right now?

In the coming year, thousands of businesses will close
their doors. In 2005, thousands of professionals will see
their income decline, and some will give up, change careers
and move on. But not you!

Let others become frustrated or stuck, but NOT YOU!

In 2005, I want your business to grow! I want you to add
new products or services. In 2005, I want your business to
capture new markets, improve your services, raise prices,
and increase profits. I want 2005 to be your best year
ever!

And, only you can make it happen. As a business owner or
leader, it is your responsibility to look ahead, analyze
the situation, develop and execute strategies to grow your
business. Whatever other daily tasks or small jobs you do,
your PRIMARY responsibility is to grow the business and now
is the time to figure out exactly how you will do that in
2005.

There are goal-setting programs and exercises. I recommend
using a large at-a-glance calendar, and matching outcomes
with specific deadlines. In the past year I worked with
many businesses of all sizes, and if a one-day retreat or
consultation will help you clarify your goals and create
more effective strategies, please contact me! I want your
business to thrive in 2005! Let me know how I can help!

Take the time. Make the investment. Hire the experts. Take
the initiative. Get away from the daily details to see the
big picture and create the future you want. If I can help,
please email me at: Coach@philiphumbert.com

#2     101 Best Ways to Get Ahead
         An "encyclopedia" of Success!
         http://philiphumbert.com/go/ma.htm

As I've been telling you recently, Michael Angier has
compiled the most useful and most powerful "encyclopedia"
for achievement I've ever seen. He calls it "101 Best Ways
to Get Ahead" and I absolutely want you to jump on this,
buy it, print it out and keep it on your desk from now on!

Creating a GREAT life is ALWAYS an on-going journey. That
is why you need this book! In life we need to achieve a
wide variety of things. Some are financial, some focus on
our relationships. Some are connected to health and
fitness, others to parenting or preparing for retirement,
but ALL of these things have one thing in common:

Other people have figured out how to do them well. Someone,
somewhere has figured out the "recipe" to achieve the
things you want in life, and Michael has compiled the
quotes, recommendations, the "recipes" to get stuff done! I
hope you'll jump on this!

#3    Think Right Now!
The Best Tools for CHANGE I've Found!
         http://philiphumbert.com/go/TRN.htm

Many of you have purchased these audio programs to increase
sales, lose weight, set and achieve goals or improve diet,
health and fitness and you know how good they are! My
clients turned me on to these CD's several months ago and
I'm incredibly impressed. I strongly urge you to jump on
this! Top achievers in every field listen to audio
programs. They imagine themselves winning, getting new
records and living the life they truly WANT, and they do it
by visualizing their victories in advance with the help of
Mike's programs. These are fantastic, both for yourself and
as gifts. Grab these!

#4     Got a Website?
         Earn Passive Income!
         http://philiphumbert.com/go/1A.htm

Over the years, I've paid lots of money for shopping carts,
autoresponders and systems that were supposed to help me
serve my subscribers and make money from my website. None
of them worked, or more accurately they worked, but they
were complex, confusing and didn't work very well. Then I
discovered Don Schnure and the amazing programs he's put
together. They work! They are powerful, EASY to use, and
they let me automate my newsletter, my affiliate programs
and my shopping cart, with no hassle! I love this! And, you
can use it for 30 days to check it out. Highly recommended!

7. Humor:    Useful Conversions To Keep Life Simple

I love the many subscribers who regularly send me quips and
puns and silly jokes, but this week I had a special treat
when a long-time friend, companion, and very special woman,
Janice White, sent these to me. Thanks, Jan! I hope you all
get a chuckle from them, as well.

For those who thought the hardest part of Chemistry or
Physics was the constant conversion from feet and inches to
the metric system, with its millimeters, kilograms and
degrees Celsius, here are some other useful conversions:

The Ratio of an igloo's circumference to its diameter:
Eskimo Pi

2000 pounds of Chinese soup equals
Won ton

1 millionth of a mouthwash equals
1 microscope

Time between slipping on a peel and smacking the pavement
equals 1 bananosecond

1 billigram

Time it takes to sail 220 yards at 1 nautical mile per hour
Knot-furlong

1 Rod Serling

Half of a large intestine
1 semicolon

1000 aches and pains
1 megahurtz

Basic unit of laryngitis
