1. The One-Minute TIP
Our homes and offices, our cars and our closets tell us who
we are and where we are going in life. Our shopping lists
predict our weight a year from now, and our hobbies predict
our fitness level. To save more and spend less, avoid the
shopping centers! To feel like a million bucks, dress well,
get a good haircut and show up for meetings a few minutes
early. List your goals on the wall and talk about them
every day. Keep your room clean. Read great books and
select the music you listen to very carefully. Over time,
our lives are made of these things!
2. Welcome Notes
In recent weeks, I've had the chance to speak to some
amazing audiences. This week I was asked if I still do any
public speaking and I realized it's been months since I
mentioned the wonderful people and great conferences I've
had the privilege of addressing.
A couple weeks ago, I was in Wisconsin for my own
Conference, and then last week I spoke to the regional
convention of the International Association of
Administrative Professionals. What a great group! Mary got
to be with me for that trip and we had a nice dinner, I did
a 3-hour workshop, and met some great people. Thanks to
Teresa Bennett and Judy Thompson for setting that up!

focus is on (1) creating a custom presentation that meets
the unique needs of each group, and (2) helping individuals
and groups create the results they truly value. I love the
quote from Peter Drucker that nothing is worse that
"climbing the ladder of success only to find, once you
reach the top, that it was leaning against the wrong wall."

3: Surround Yourself With Your Dreams
I believe that, as much as anything else, human beings are
products of our environments. As a Psychologist, I've heard
the "nature vs. nurture" argument for most of my life, and
obviously our genetic inheritance and our up-bringing are
both important, but in my experience, our currently
dominant environment plays an even bigger role.
That's critical when you set out to create and live a great life.
This week I met with a client who has been working very
hard to achieve some vitally important personal goals. He's
read the books and listened to the audio programs. He's
attended a variety of seminars, set goals and made lists,
and yet his actual success has been mediocre. He's not
happy, and as his coach, I was not happy. So, we decided it
was time for coach and client to sit down and figure things out.
We met at the airport and he took me to his office, which
could have been any nice professional office building in
the country. There were the usual diplomas and certificates,
and some nice pictures on the walls, but there was nothing to
tell me who he was, what he valued or where he is going in life.
We drove to his home for dinner, and I observed the same
thing. Great house! (I hope to have one as large some day.)
It was filled with beautiful furnishings, had a lovely yard
and lots of privacy, and an incredible gourmet kitchen.
But no where did he declare or describe the life he wants
to create for himself. There were no obvious posters. No
project lists or goal statements. No signs, photographs or
symbols of the life he wants for himself and his family. He
is surrounded by what I call "elegant sterility." His home
is expensive and tasteful, but it's not inhabited by any
particular personality. How sad is that?
I am convinced that we are goal achieving creatures. We are
always "going for" our dominant thought or desire. If we
surround ourselves with familiar symbols of the status quo,
we tend to maintain things as they are. It's only when we
surround ourselves with the "signs and symptoms" of the
life we truly want that our unconscious daily habits begin
to automatically take us forward.
In talking with my client, I recommended that he interrupt
the flow of his decorated home with hand-painted signs,
with lists of his goals, and photographs of the things he
wants. I suggested putting notes on his bathroom mirror,
the dash of his car, and on his desk. I suggested a trip to
create rich, wonderful memories of the things he wants in
Over time, we adapt to our surroundings and our lives
become consistent with our environments. Day by day, we
choose our surroundings and then, over time, our
surroundings shape our lives.
Here are some simple examples. If you are trying to lose
weight, would you rather see a kitchen full of candy, ice
cream and cookies, or cupboards filled with fresh fruits,
vegetables and healthy snacks? If you want a new yacht this
year, is it better to day-dream about it, or to attend the
boat show and see, smell, and touch the yacht of your
dreams? I think the answer is clear.
Every day, our homes and offices, our cars and our closets

5. Strictly Business: You Gotta Love it!
A long time ago, I heard Jim Rohn talk about the necessity
to "love your work, every single day." I've never forgotten
Jim was wise enough to make the distinction about "liking"
your work every day. Very few of us are fortunate enough to
enjoy every moment of every day on the job. Things go
wrong. People get cranky. Sometimes, stress and tension and
anxiety are life's way of telling us we are in the wrong
line of work, or it's time to make some changes.
But those daily ups and downs are not the same thing as
"loving" your work.
I recently got an email from a friend who noted that his 13-
year old son can be "a handful, but we don't love him
because it's easy, we love him because we do." Your
relationship with your career should be something like that.
Ultimately, your financial success is the result of
"loving" your work--nurturing it over time, going the extra
mile, doing it right whether anyone is watching or not.
Love means taking care of the details. Loving your work
means investing in your customers, investing in tools and
skills and resources. Ultimately, loving your work means
investing in your own future.
Whatever your job, profession, or business, love and
sustain it. Care for it and give it every chance to grow.
There is no other path to ultimate, long-term success.
