1. The One-Minute TIP
Knowing your deepest DESIRES and matching them with even
minimal DISCIPLINE, is the recipe for achievement. When
Stephen Covey talks about "starting with the end in mind,"
he's talking about being clear about your desires. When we
talk about written goals, we're talking about strong
desires. When you know what you truly want, and go after it
with discipline and determination, the results are
2. Welcome Notes
Spring has finally come (again!) to Oregon! We had some
beautiful weather a few weeks ago, then it turned cold and
rainy. This week, however, has made up for it! Sunny and
breezy, blue skies and LOTS of time on the deck! I've been
reading and writing like crazy, and Cody (the dog) even got
a bath, which he doesn't like, but he knows he always gets
to run in the park after he suffers through the process, so
he tolerates the indignity. Life is GOOD!
And, I have great news! I have TWO special no-cost goodies
First, my friend and colleague, Vic Johnson, has agreed to
do a no-cost (that means fr.ee!) teleconference from his
series of "Claim Your Power Now!" workshops. I had the
privilege of being on-stage with him three times (in
Dallas, Chicago and Toronto) for this powerful material and
I'm delighted to bring it to my TIPS subscribers. He's
calling this abbreviated version, "Claim Your Power Now
with Belief" and it will be spectacular! It will be
recorded, so even if you can't attend the live call, you'll
get all the info.
But you must register! There's more info below in the
Resources section, but register now. You'll be glad you
did! To be included, visit:
or send a blank email to:
email@example.com And be
to pass this along to your friends!
Secondly, my friend and web-guru, Kristie Tamsevicius, is
giving away copies of her best-selling book, "I Love My
Life!" as a bonus for TIPS subscribers. If you've ever
considered working from home or starting an online
business, you need this book. Again, there's more info in
the Resource section below, but just grab your (no-cost!)
3: The Recipes for Chaos & Achievement
We all want lives of achievement, health, happiness and
some measure of wealth. We want the "good life!" And yet,
the vast majority end up leading relatively average, middle-
class lives. How can this be? How can so many of the
world's most educated people end up working paycheck to
I think the answers are pretty simple.
Most of us were never taught HOW to create and live a great
life! We don't study this in school. We admire people who
have done great things, but no one coaches us, no one shows
us the way. And so we stumble. We struggle. We ARE
educated, ambitious, educated people and we do the best we
can, but without the basic recipe, too often we get only
So, I want to share with you two of the most important
"recipes" I know. I teach these formulas to my coaching
clients and I want to share them with you. My price? Only
this: If you find them helpful, I ask that you pass them on
to at least two other people. Forward this email, or print
it out and mail it to two friends. I hope you're willing to
Ok, here we go.
The first recipe is what I call the recipe for chaos. It
goes like this: Impulse + Opportunity = Chaos
Every day, we all have impulses to study or to spend, to do
our work or to watch television. Impulses are merely ideas
that pop into our brains and momentarily catch our
attention. The problem is that they are relatively random
and too many are based on casual appetites or unhealthy
temptations. There's nothing inherently bad or wrong with
our impulses, but there is nothing inherently good or
trustworthy about them, either.
And, too often our impulses get matched with opportunity
for instant gratification. Here's how it works.
Consider the impulse to spend, combined with a credit card
in your wallet. Too often, the result is casual debt, and
that can be a problem. Or how about the impulse to watch
television (just one show), combined with a beautiful new
TV in the family room? Too often, the result is wasted
time. You see the pattern?
Impulses happen. When we surround ourselves with
opportunities for instant gratification, the result can be
a life lurching out of control.
Now, consider another recipe, the one for achievement. Here
it is: Desire + Discipline = Achievement
"Desire" comes from Latin words that mean "of the father."
Our deepest desires represent our true longings, our
mission or purpose or values in life. When we are clear
about our real DESIRES and combine them with a disciplined
life, the results can be astonishing!
Jonas Salk had the DESIRE to prevent polio and the
DISCIPLINE to do the research, study his notes and make the
discoveries. The results changed the world. Mary Kay Ash
(of Mary Kay Cosmetics) had the DESIRE to help single moms
like herself, and the DISCIPLINE to find a way. She had no
money (she started with $500) and no business experience,
but she pressed forward. She changed an industry and helped
millions of women in the process.
Random impulses in a world of undisciplined opportunity can
lead to chaos, debt, and disaster. Knowing your deepest
DESIRES and matching them with even minimal DISCIPLINE,
however, is the recipe for achievement. When Stephen Covey
talks about "starting with the end in mind," he's talking
about being clear about your desires. When we talk about
written goals, we're talking about strong desires. When you
know what you truly want, and go after it with discipline
and determination, the results are astounding.
That's the recipe for achievement!
4. Quotes of the Week
"If you can DREAM it, you can DO it."
-- Walt Disney
"Man is so made that when anything fires his soul,
-- Jean De La Fontaine
"If you are clear about what you want, the world responds
-- Loretta Staples
"The future belongs to those who believe in their dreams."
-- Eleanor Roosevelt
5. Strictly Business: Study
I'm often called in to consult or coach with business
leaders who are confused, even terrified by what they
perceive to be a terrible business situation. Maybe sales
are down even though they've added more sales people.
Perhaps production costs are up and profits are plummeting.
Sometimes key people are leaving, and they don't know why.
Granted, sometimes the answers are hard to find and we have
work to do, but often the answers are readily
the answers are sitting right on their desk in the form of
numbers they haven't bothered to analyze.
Every business has a small number of critical
"measurables." For a therapist, these include the number of
clients, the average length of treatment, and the number of
new referrals per month. With just those three numbers, you
can pretty well predict the future of any clinical
practice. Obviously, the cost of rent, staffing and many
other numbers are also helpful, but those three tell you
most of what you need to know.
In other businesses, the variables will be different, but
they ALL need to be studied.
I once worked with a large, regional landscaping company.
For them, the key variable was the ratio of total monthly
revenue divided by total payroll. That single number said
volumes about the over-all health of the company.
Whatever your key variables, study them! Too often managers
and CEO's get so caught up in planning for the future and
putting out daily "fires" that they forget to crunch the
numbers. I believe in numbers! Study them. You can learn a
lot from a few key numbers, and make adjustments

Claim Your Power Now
A No-Cost Conference
with Vic Johnson!
Thursday, June 22nd at
7:00 PM ET
I've done very few teleconferences in the past few years,
but when Vic agreed to do this one, I jumped on it! Do you
sometimes feel your results don't match your abilities? Do
you feel stuck or confused that the year is half-over and
your goals seem out of reach? We all have tremendous power
to change our lives! We have the ability, the resources and
tools (or we can get them!) - but too often we get "caught"
in daily chores and fail to claim and USE our power!
I've seen Vic present this material three times (in Dallas,
Chicago and Toronto) and it's amazing! Invest just one hour
of your time, either on the phone or listening to the
recording, and let his insights and simple, powerful
techniques help you "Claim Your Power!" Vic has turned his
own life around in just a few short years, and so can you!
This is amazing, powerful and practical stuff! I hope

How Ordinary People
Create Extraordinary Lives
My new Book and Audio
"Leaders are readers." We've all heard this phrase, and we
know that highly successful people invest in their
education. They read for inspiration, for information, for
motivation and for examples. We also know that most people
read very little, and it shows in their lives.
One of the best things you can do is spend just 15 minutes
a day reading a positive, educational book to enrich your
life, and yet most people never do. I urge you to buy and
read this book! Think about your values, learn how other
people organize their time and create the life of their
dreams. There are no "secrets," just models and choices
that make all the difference.
You can get the book (I'll even pay the shipping) or the
audio programs, or both, whichever suits you best. But
invest in yourself. I hope you'll check it out and make the
small investment to create the extraordinary life you
Organize, Prepare and
Deliver a GREAT Presentation
Without Stress, Worry
Last week, over 100 subscribers signed up for Dawn's free
bonuses and that's a great start! Now, I want ALL the rest
of you to do this! We all have to make presentations from
time to time. Some of us do it professionally and we MUST
do a great job, every time. Other's speak or teach rarely,
and we need all the tools and confidence we can get because
even if you only speak at family reunions or to your club
or church group occasionally, you want to be calm, clear
Get and read this wonderful collection of resources. As a
professional speaker, I learned (and was reminded of)
dozens of tips, large and small, to make my presentations
more powerful. For people who present only occasionally,
the ability to relax, know that you're organized and
"ready" is priceless. We know that many people fear public
speaking, and much of that fear comes from not feeling
confident. Do yourself a favor - get these tools and keep
them in your office. When your time comes, you'll be glad
to have them within reach!
7. Humor: Some Jobs Are Just No Pun
These are really cute! They've been around for a long time,
but my friend, Bob Armstrong, sent them to me again
recently, and I had to pass them along. Enjoy - and no
My first job was working in an Orange Juice factory,
but I got canned. I couldn't concentrate.
Then I worked in the woods as a Lumberjack, but I
just couldn't hack it, so they gave me the axe.
After that, I tried to be a Tailor, but I wasn't suited for
it - mainly because it was a sew-sew job.
Next, I tried working in a Muffler Factory, but that
was too exhausting.
Then, I tried to be a Chef - figured it would add a
little spice to my life, but I just didn't have the thyme.
I attempted to be a Deli Worker, but any way I
sliced it, I couldn't cut the mustard.
I studied a long time to become a Doctor, but I
didn't have any patience.
Next, was a job in a Shoe Factory. I tried but I
couldn't fit in. I became depressed and soulful.
Then there was the Professional Fisherman job. But I
discovered that I couldn't live on my net income.
I managed to get a job working for a Pool Maintenance
Company, but the work was just too draining.
So then I got a job in a Workout Center, but they
said I wasn't fit for the job.
After many years of trying to find steady work, I
finally got a job as an Historian - until I realized
there was no future in it.
My last job was working in Starbucks, but I had
to quit because it was always the same old grind.
Be kind to yourself and to someone else, and have a
