2. Welcome Notes


I’m celebrating some personal victories! They aren’t connected to my work, my finances, or anything the world will get excited about, but I had my annual physical this week and I did good! In the past year, I’ve lost 12 pounds, my blood pressure and resting heart-rate are down, I feel good and I got Dr Brandt to smile! I’m not ready to run a marathon, but he says I may live longer and that makes me, my doctor and my wife very happy. Hurrah for small victories!

Next, some exciting news! For all of you who own a business, work for a business, or hope to open a business someday (have I covered everyone?),I have some great news. 3: How to Maximize Your Personal Productivity


This is the final installment in our series on the art of getting stuff done each and every day. High achievers DO get more done! We have to face that reality and come to grips with it. We all have the same amount of time each day, so what are the “keys” that allow winners to accomplish so much more than the rest of us?

Part of the key to personal productivity is the language we use to describe our lives, our work, and our days. The way we “talk to ourselves” and the language we use to describe our world makes a huge difference.

Frustrated people talk about the “demands” on their time. Top achievers talk about the “requests” for their time. Top performers take full responsibility for their lives and their results. They are adamant that THEY are in charge and they choose where to focus their efforts. Too many of us play the victim when it comes to our personal productivity. We complain about interruptions or poor equipment or scheduling conflicts. Winners close the door, buy their own tools and get the job done.

Winners use self-talk to manage themselves and their world.

Winners are crystal clear about their top priority at any given moment. They understand that no matter what is going on around them, at any given moment there is only ONE “most important thing,” and they focus on it.

I love Denis Waitley’s phrase that winners do the things that are “goal achieving rather than tension relieving.”

If you aren’t satisfied with your current results – with your income, your family, your health, job or any other aspect of your life – take time to get totally clear about what you would PREFER, then make it happen. If you need more money, the key is simply to provide more and better services to people who will pay you! It isn’t hard! Ask yourself who your best customers are (or could be), what they want, how you can contact them, and take the steps to increase your sales. That’s what winners do!

Is it easy? Not always. Isn’t it comfortable? Probably not. Does it happen over-night? Not usually! And those realities mean you have a decision to make. Most people decide that it’s “too hard” or will “take too long” and they turn to some tension relieving activity (busy work or errands or whatever) and then complain that they worked really, really hard but didn’t get the results they hoped for.

Successful people make a different decision. They decide that since it will be hard or time-consuming or uncomfortable, they better get started right away and stick with it “until.” There is no mystery to this!

Here are three more critical factors.

1.  Winners balance personal impatience with productive perseverance. They are in a hurry, but if improving their health will take a year or more, they accept that fact and start today. If reaching their financial goals will take five years, they understand the value of starting immediately. The longer a goal will take, or the harder a project seems, the more important it is to take productive, strategic action right away.

2.  Second, winners are very good at saying, NO! They are not shy about closing their door, turning off the phone, declining an invitation, or passing up a “golden” opportunity that will distract them from their primary mission. We live in a world that seems designed to distract us from our goals. Our phones ring, friends interrupt us, family needs come up every day, but winners stay focused any way! Do whatever it takes to get your job done!

3.  Finally, winners gladly “pay the price” of success. They know that great victories in life may require sacrifice or hard choices, and they GLADLY make them. Too many of us whine or complain or get stuck trying to choose between our long-term goals and our short-term pleasures. Winners are never confused about that! You shouldn’t be, either.

When you are totally clear about what you want and the steps to achieve it, and are willing to pay the price, your personal productivity will soar!

5. Strictly Business: In Marketing, C = (N) x (I)


Every week, I receive emails from professionals and small business owners requesting coaching to turn their practice into a true, systematized business, and many of those requests focus on marketing. It seems most professionals, from Accountants to Veterinarians want help in attracting more customers.

I've developed a formula that helps my clients strategize about their marketing campaigns and it works like this:

The number of clients (customers) a marketing program attracts is a product of the N (Number) of people in your audience, multiplied by the I (Impact) of your presentation. The result is very simple. To increase sales, you must either reach more people – increase the N – or increase the Impact of your presentation. Here are three examples.

A radio ad in a major market might reach a million listeners (N), but the impact (I) will be very small. Changing the ad to a radio call-in show might still reach the same number of listeners, but by increasing the Impact, you'll attract more business.

Similarly, a speech to a local service club might have an audience of 100 people, but if your presentation creates enough Impact, you'll still attract several new clients.

If you mail 1000 brochures and attract 6 new clients, the (I) for that mailing is .006 and the formula C = N x I works out to be: 6 Clients = 1000 x .006

You can attract more business by increasing the Number of prospects, or by increasing the Impact you have on each of them. Some people prefer contacting more people via the Internet or renting large mailing lists, while others prefer the intimacy and personal contact of workshops. Any method can work, but the formula remains the same: C = (N) x (I).

Tech support:  That doesn't sound good; I'll make a note.
Customer:  No, wait a minute... I hadn't inserted it yet... it's still on my desk... sorry....

Tech support:  Click on the 'my computer' icon on to the left of the screen.
Customer:  Your left or my left?

Tech support:  Good day. How may I help you?
Male customer:   Hello... I can't print.
Tech support: Would you click on "Start"  for me and...
Customer:  Listen pal; don't start getting technical on me! I'm not Bill Gates.

Customer:  Hi, good afternoon, this is Martha, I can't print. Every time I try, it says 'Can't find printer'. I've even lifted the printer and placed it in front of the monitor, but the computer still says he can't find it...

Customer:  I have problems printing in red...
Tech support:  Do you have a color printer?
Customer:  Aaaah....................thank you.

Tech support:  What's on your monitor now, ma'am?
Customer:   A teddy bear my boyfriend bought for me at the 7-11.

Customer:   My keyboard is not working anymore.
Tech support:  Are you sure it's plugged into the computer?
Customer:  No. I can't get behind the computer.
Tech support:  Pick up your keyboard and walk 10 paces back.
Customer:   OK
Tech support:   Did the keyboard come with you?
Customer:  Yes
Tech support:  That means the keyboard is not plugged in. Is there another keyboard?
Customer:  Yes, there's another one here. Ah...that one does work...

Customer:   I can't get on the Internet.
Tech support:  Are you sure you used the right password?
Customer:  Yes, I'm sure. I saw my colleague do it.
Tech support:  Can you tell me what the password was?
Customer:  Five stars.

Customer:   I have a huge problem. A friend has placed a screen saver on my computer, but every time I move the mouse, it disappears.

A woman customer called the Canon help desk about a problem with her printer.
Tech support:  Are you running it under windows?
Customer:  "No, my desk is next to the door, but that is a good point. The man sitting in the cubicle next to me is under a window, and his  printer is working fine."

And last but not least...

Tech support: "Okay Bob, let's press the control and escape keys at the same time. That brings up a task list in the middle of the screen. Now type the letter "P" to bring up the Program Manager."
Customer:  I don't have a P.
Tech support:  On your keyboard, Bob.
Customer:   What do you mean?
Tech support:  "P".....on your keyboard, Bob.
Customer:  I'M NOT GOING TO DO THAT!
