Nothing will change until something changes. What steps or changes will
move you forward this week? What must you read or learn? What must you
do, or stop doing? What must you invest? Who should you call, or stop
calling? If your dreams and goals are truly important to you, do one
thing different this week. Take a step. Try a new way. Just do it!

2. Welcome Notes
I’m not a big sports fan, but no one could miss the preparations for our
local University of Oregon “Ducks” to host California this Saturday. The
town is alive with Duck colors (yellow and green) and everyone seems to
have a flag or sticker on their car. Even better, as I write this on
Friday morning, Mother Nature is promising a classic “football Saturday”
with cool temperatures and the smell of autumn in the air. One of the
major television networks is in town and it should be a great game.
As I say, I’m not much of a fan, but it’s good to celebrate the
traditions that bring us together. So in that spirit, “Go Ducks!” (And
may your favorite team win, too!)
On a much more somber note, this week, Mary and I spent time watching
Ken Burns' new film about World War II on public television. I found it
incredibly hard to watch, and hard to turn away.
I do not know the answer to terrorism or hate, but the horrors of war
know no bounds. In this time of tension, let us pray that we might live
together in peace and mutual respect.
In your community or corner of the world, reach out to your neighbors.
Make your contribution. Share your life, your hope and your bounty. The
future of our small planet depends upon it.

3: Nothing Changes Until Something Changes
I've often said I've never met a lazy person. I often meet folks who are
stuck or frustrated, or who seem to go in directions that make no sense
to me, but I've never met anyone who doesn't want more of some things
and less of something else. As the Dalai Lama notes, we are designed to
move toward happiness and away from suffering. We're built that way.
I have noticed with increasing frequency, however, that we often work
really hard to accomplish very little. We are a stubborn lot! We try and
try, and try again, even though our favorite strategy isn't working, and
there is little evidence it will ever work. And yet, we keep on trying.
Most of the people who will read this actually live pretty comfortable
lives. You have a computer. You are educated and have job skills. You
may live in a wealthy country, are probably fairly healthy, and the
essentials of life—food, clothing, shelter, perhaps even a savings
plan—are taken care of. So, it might make sense for TIP's readers to be
quite content and to want very little.
But that is not what I hear from clients, or in my email. We are a very
ambitious group! We want more money, more time, more personal
fulfillment, more satisfying work, and so forth. We are restless, and I
love that!
But it also raises the obvious question, Why aren't we getting the
things we say we want?
We live in a golden age of opportunity and plenty. Over any 5-year
period, you can have, see, do or become just about anything you desire.
You can visit Antarctica—Mary and I did that in 2002. You can get an
advanced degree, become wealthy, run a marathon, start a band, or move
to Alaska. There are no limits!
So, why aren't we getting the things we say we want?
My blunt answer is this: Many of us are using ineffective strategies. We
have goals or desires or dreams, but we are pursuing them with
strategies that have almost no chance of succeeding. We have been
"trying" for years without success, and yet we keep on doing the same
things in the same ways, year after year. That is really dumb!
If you are not reaching your goal, you have two basic choices: change
your goal, or change your strategy. You either "get this" or you don't.
What more can I say?
The reality is that you CAN be happy in this life. You can make money,
if that is your goal. You can raise happy, healthy kids if that is your
dream. You can build a huge company or start a charitable foundation.
You can write a book or teach high school or do whatever fills your
heart with joy.
But to have those things in your life, something must change. If your
current strategy isn't working, tell the truth about that. If you've had
a major goal for more than a year and it isn't happening, ask why not!
Question your approach. Get better advice. Do something different!
And, above all, acknowledge the things that have to change in order to
make room for your goal to arrive. Who will you have to become? What
will you have to stop doing? Who or what will have to exit your life in
order for new realities to be at home in your world?
Nothing will change until something changes. What steps or changes will
move you forward this week? What must you read or learn? What must you
do, or stop doing? What must you invest? Who should you call, or stop
calling? If your dreams and goals are truly important to you, do one
thing different this week. Take a step. Try a new way. Just do it!

5. Strictly Business: Define Your Results in Advance
This week, one of my clients wrote his summary of the month, and
realized he had mis-dated the document for October. In noting this, he
made the discovery that writing his "end of month report" before the
month starts is a powerful way to define exactly what his priorities for
the month really are.
Too often in business (and in life) our "goal statements" are more like
wish lists, or the Christmas lists children send to Santa Claus. They
are statements of what we would like or hope for, not necessarily
descriptions of the actions, efforts, and decisions we are committed to
taking.
By writing your "end of month" report in advance, you describe your
specific results in advance, and in business, we know that only results
really count. By describing in detail precisely what you did, what you
earned, what you achieved or accomplished or learned, you are describing
"outcomes," rather than wishes. Critical distinction!
Your business will not grow because of your intentions, desires, hopes
or dreams. Your customers will never know how much you care if you
merely think or worry about them all day long. One phone call or a short
note often produces more results than a "ton" of thinking about it!
Define your outcomes in advance. List your results in real terms—pounds
and dollars and dates—and then commit to producing the results you've
described. That is a far more effective goal statement than any
Christmas wish list!

7. Humor: Qantas Airlines
Once again, I want to thank my friend and resident humorist, Dolly, for
some great humor.
Never let it be said that ground crews and engineers lack a sense of
humor. Here are some logged maintenance complaints by QANTAS pilots and
the corrective action recorded by mechanics. And by the way, Qantas is
the only major airline that has never had an accident.
(P stands for the problem the pilots entered in the log, and S stands
for the corrective action taken by the mechanics.)
P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement.
S: Almost replaced left inside main tire.
P: Test flight OK, except auto land very rough.
S: Auto land not installed on this aircraft.
P: Something loose in cockpit.
S: Something tightened in cockpit.
P: Dead bugs on windshield.
S: Live bugs on backorder.
P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200-fpm descent.
S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground.
P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.
S: Evidence removed.
P: DME volume unbelievably loud.
S: DME volume set to more believable level.
P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.
S: That's what they're there for!
P: IFF inoperative.
S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode.

airplane; the pilot meant the engine was not running smoothly)
