1. The One-Minute TIP
In the days and weeks ahead, you have a choice to make. You can believe your
eyes and ears, and be worried about many things. Or you can believe that after
the darkness, the sun comes up almost every morning. You can choose to believe
that after the winter, spring arrives in April or May. You can believe the fog
will lift and things will be brighter in the morning, and act accordingly.
Choose wisely.

2. Welcome Notes
Before anything else, I want to thank each of you for subscribing to TIPS this
year. I want to provide good ideas, inspiration and a bit of humor in each
issue, but it is also a labor of love. I realize it is an honor to be invited to
your inbox every week. I appreciate it, and try never to take it for granted.
This week I sent an “extra” holiday issue about practical ways to “make peace”
in our own lives and with those around us. The response was absolutely
astounding…and humbling! Dozens of people sent such gracious, thoughtful notes.
Thanks to each of you! (If you’d like to read that issue on my website, click
HERE.)
And of course, I want to take one more opportunity to wish everyone a joyous
Holiday Season and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. “Never miss an
opportunity to throw a good party!” While our home traditionally focuses on
Christmas, I love that Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and the Solstice are all so near each
other! And in a few days, we start a whole new year! What a glorious, wonderful
time!
But also a serious note. There are millions of people who are not celebrating.
Some are hungry, many are alone. Some are sick, or tired, or unemployed and
sacred to death. Some have small children, some are homeless. Some are simply
old and have out-lived their loved ones. Reach out to someone this week. Give a
smile if that’s all you can spare, but do something kind for someone. In this
“season of lights” try to lighten someone’s load, if only in a small way. You’ll
be glad you did and it will make our troubled world just a bit more joyful.
Last but not least, this is the last week to grab a copy of my December
Freebie of the Month, Goal-Setting 101™. The month has gone so fast!
Almost 7000 people (!) have their copy and you don’t want to be left out. This
week, we start the New Year and you want goals and plans, dreams and strategies
that fit! For many people, 2009 was a stressful year. Leave nothing to chance in
2010! Make it your “Best Year Ever!” Start with clear goals and twelve months of
email coaching! Go to:
http://PhilipHumbert.com/Free
And finally, a reminder to join me in signing up for Michael Angier’s “Diamond
Club” in 2010. If you’ve been looking for a MasterMind team to support you
every week, this is the program I personally use and highly recommend. Check it
out and sign up (Like, duh!) by clicking

3: You Have a Choice, Choose Wisely
I’m writing this on a cold, foggy afternoon. The fog has hidden the setting sun
and it’s dreary, damp, and dark. I can see some colored Christmas lights across
the way, but right now, the cold, dark fog feels like the very definition of
"winter."
For many of us, 2009 has been a difficult year and this afternoon seems like a
metaphor of that. In business, the recession has taken a toll and new
regulations, new taxes and new health care legislation (in the U.S.) create
anxiety and uncertainty. In our personal lives, many are anxious about their
investments and their retirement. Millions have lost their homes this year (that
still seems incredible!) and millions more are unemployed.
It becomes easy to see this as a dark, cold, dreary time. Intellectually, we
know the Solstice has come and in the Northern Hemisphere, the days will soon
get longer, sunnier and warmer. We know that spring is scheduled in a few weeks.
But today is dark. Depression threatens.
The contrast between the hope of our religious festivals and the anxiety when we
consider our balance sheets, our bank accounts or our checkbooks is palpable.
Today, even more than most days, we have to make a choice, and the choice is
very clear.
We can look at what “is” and worry. There are powerful, reasonable arguments to
be afraid (be very afraid!) and to hunker down. From global warming to political
uncertainty to economic difficulty, smart people all over the world are on the
defensive. When the “best and the brightest” among us see doom and gloom and
uncertainty, who wouldn’t worry? It’s a reasonable thing to do and I can’t blame
anyone for focusing on the difficulties ahead.
But others see the coming of spring. Others see the start of a New Year with its
endless possibilities. Our language is full of clichés that remind us it’s
“always darkest before the dawn.” We know that the most successful investors
have always been contrarians who sell when everyone else is euphoric at the top
of the bubble, and buy when the world is full of pessimists, doom and gloom.
Warren Buffett, perhaps the greatest investor ever, just made his biggest
investment ever. He bought the Burlington-Northern railroad for 36 billion
dollars! He’s betting that the future is bright and stuff is going to be
shipped. Stuff is going to be manufactured. It will be bought and sold and we’re
going to need a railroad to move it all.
Donald Trump has been buying real estate all year long, and he’s no dummy. At
fire-sale prices, he figures the future hold great promise. He reminds me of one
of my favorite stories about investing. J. Paul Getty, once the richest man in
the world, said that the way to get rich was to “be real nice. When people want
to sell, be a gentleman and take it off their hands. When they’re desperate to
buy, be real nice and sell it to them!”
In the days and weeks ahead, you have a choice to make. You can believe your
eyes and ears, and be worried. You can read the papers and listen to the news of
gloom and doom. You can look outside and see only darkness and fog, and respond
accordingly. That’s what most people do, and it makes sense. As I said, I can’t
blame anyone for that.
But, you can also believe that after the darkness, the sun comes up almost every
morning. You can believe that after the winter, spring arrives every April or
May. You can choose to believe the fog will lift and things will be brighter in
the morning.
My own suggestion is that this is a good time to buy sunglasses and stock up on
sunscreen. My own preference is put on the snow tires, and buy skies and a warm
jacket to enjoy the winter, while it lasts. Then, when warm weather and optimism
return, I’ll be the first one on the beach!
The choice is yours. Believe your eyes and ears and hunker down. Or, as the song
said, you can be a “cockeyed optimist” and prepare for spring. For myself, Mary
bought me my annual swimsuit calendar (I know, a silly, sexist thing, but gosh
it’s fun!), and from where I sit, “all the world’s a beach.” Choose wisely. Be
prepared. Make 2010 a GREAT year!
Whatever your choice, you’ll need goals and plans and focus to make it happen.
Join us for Git ‘er Done in 2010! You'll have plans, email support, and
(if you wish) coaching calls to "make it so!" Your first step (it's FREE!) is to

5. Strictly Business: Who's Your Mentor?
Who is your mentor? Who shows you the ropes, teaches you the tricks and shows
you the way?
This week I had several people contact me about coaching in 2010, which is a
very good thing. But, I also had several conversations with people who "don't
need a coach" and don't have any mentors. I noticed they didn't seem to make as
much money or achieve as many of their goals in 2009. Is that you?
Over and over again, I'm struck that the real winners in life always learn from
those who went before them. Winners ALWAYS have mentors! They learn from the
experts and benefit from the success of others.
Sometimes they have a personal coach – and as a coach, I think that's a good
thing! But often they have informal relationships with men and women who are
willing to teach them. Often, the best mentoring comes from a MasterMind group
or team.
Some of my most valuable resources are the seminars, workshops and lectures I
attend every year. I remember hearing a colleague say he wouldn't attend anymore
seminars "because they cut the budget and (his employer) won't pay for it
anymore." How terribly short-sighted!
The cost of workshops is nothing! The cost of travel, tuition and hotels is
NOTHING if you learn one new idea or avoid one mistake. The chance to rub
shoulders with the best and brightest in your field is priceless! In 2010, "just
do it!"
Double (or triple!) your budget for books and seminars, for coaching and
teaching. Call the most successful people you know and buy them lunch. Take them
to the best restaurant you can afford, and pick their brains. Hire a coach. Are
there seminars you "might" attend this year? Register now! Make it a Christmas
present or use any excuse you have to, but make sure you get the "helping hand"
you need to make 2010 your best year EVER!
Here are two practical suggestions:
1. Email me about coaching in 2010! I've got openings the first of the
year and I would love to hear from you! Contact me at:
Coach@philiphumbert.com
2. Join Michael Angier's Diamond Club MasterMind program! It's the one I
use and I highly recommend it. Get weekly encouragement, support and solutions
from your team, along with regular live training calls. For info and to sign up,

http://philiphumbert.com/go/1A.htm
Over the years, I've paid lots of money for shopping carts, autoresponders and
systems that were supposed to help me serve my subscribers and make money from
my website. None of them worked, or more accurately they worked, but they were
complex, confusing and didn't work very well. Then I discovered Don Schnu re and
the amazing programs he's put together. They work! They are powerful, EASY to
use, and they let me automate my newsletter, my affiliate programs and my
shopping cart, with no hassle! I love this! And, you can use it for 30 days to
check it out. Highly recommended!

7. Humor: The Truth About Hugs
My friend and frequent humor contributor, Paul Vogt sent these to me and I
thought Christmas week was the perfect time to pass them along. Remember the old
“research” that said we need like 15 hugs a day to maintain optimum health? I
never did find the documentation on that, but I’m absolutely sure it’s true! Hug
someone today!
Hugs are non-fattening and they don’t cause cancer or cavities.
Hugs are all natural with no preservatives, artificial preservatives or toxic
residue
Hugs are cholesterol-free, naturally sweet, 100% wholesome and a renewable
resource
Hugs are easy to care for, they don’t require batteries, tune-ups or day-care
Hugs are non-taxable, fully returnable and energy-efficient
Hugs are safe in all kinds of weather
Hugs are especially good on cold or rainy days
Hugs are exceptionally effective for treating problems like bad dreams,
disappointments and blue Mondays
Hugs are good for people of all ages, shapes and sizes
Hugs may be considered “politically incorrect” (which makes them even more
delicious) but on the positive side, they are FUN!
Give someone a hug today – you’re almost sure to get one right back!
